We follow the North Star District's rules. There's quite a bit in there, but the highlights are:
Cars must weigh 5.0 ounces or less
Maximum size is 7" long x 2.75" wide x 4.5" high
Only official wood, wheels, and axles may be used (though you may purchase pre-cut blanks and colorful wheels from the Scout Shop)
No modifying wheels or axles, except smoothing to remove surface imperfections
All 4 wheels must touch the track
No lubrication except graphite or powdered Teflon
Cubs will compete in 3 categories - Speed, Craftsmanship, and Originality. A winner for each category will be chosen from each Den, and they will go on to compete in that category at the District level. In addition, one car in the Pack will receive the Scouts' Choice award based on popular vote.
This is your opportunity to use adult leaders' power tools and expertise to design and cut your car. Check your email for the Pinewood Derby 2026 Flyer and choose a time slot on the Signup Genius (if you don't sign up, then there might not be anyone there)!
Your finished car will be weighed and measured to ensure it complies with the rules, and your name and your car's name will be recorded. You will turn in your car to be kept until the race, so you must have all work completed beforehand!Â
Judging for the categories of Craftsmanship and Originality will take place immediately after the check-in window.
This is the main event! Cubs will compete to win the Speed trophy for their den. After all of the heats are completed, trophies will be awarded for all categories.
Assuming the technology cooperates, we will livestream the event on Facebook for those who can't attend in person.
The winners from each den will compete against other winners across the district at Triangle Towne Center mall. You will compete only in the category for which you won at the Pack level. You must be present on race day to compete!
Adult seating is limited, so consider bringing your own chair.
For maximum speed, get your car as close to the weight limit as possible without going over. You can use a kitchen scale to check your car at home.
Put the wheels on last, and be careful not to crack the wood when inserting the axles. You may find it helpful to pre-drill holes for them.
Make sure any added weights are secure and cannot come out of the car during the race or while it's impounded.
